Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is one of several proteins incorporated into the cornified cell envelope during terminal differentiation of keratinocytes in the outer layers of the epidermis. It interacts with periplakin, a precursor of the cornified cell envelope. The localization and insolubility of this protein suggest a role in epithelial differentiation and epidermal integrity. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been observed.
