Target Information
NCSTN (Nicastrin) encodes a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that is an essential component of the multimeric gamma-secretase complex. This protein is involved in the cleavage of integral membrane proteins such as Notch receptors and beta-amyloid precursor protein. It may function as a stabilizing cofactor required for gamma-secretase complex assembly. The cleavage of beta-amyloid precursor protein produces amyloid beta peptide, the main component of neuritic plaques characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease. Mutations in NCSTN are also linked to familial acne inversa. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 21.
