GTP-binding proteins are GTPases that act as molecular switches, cycling between active (GTP-bound) and inactive (GDP-bound) states. When an extracellular ligand binds to a G-protein-linked receptor, the receptor activates trimeric G proteins by promoting GDP-GTP exchange. The active G protein can then transmit signals to downstream targets until GTP hydrolysis returns it to the inactive state.
