Tom22는 세포질에 노출된 음전하의 N-말단 영역, 막관통 영역, 그리고 음전하가 적은 C-말단의 막간공간 영역으로 구성되어 있습니다.
세 영역의 기능은 다음과 같습니다:
- N-말단 도메인: 프리시퀀스 결합에 중요한 이중 역할 수행
- 막간공간 도메인: 프리시퀀스에 대한 trans 결합 부위 제공
- 단일 막 앵커: GIP 복합체의 구조적 완전성 유지에 중요
포유류의 TOM 복합체는 진균의 Tom 복합체와 유사하나, 식물 TOM 시스템과는 구별됩니다.
포유류 미토콘드리아 수입 시스템의 고유 구성요소(TOM34, metaxin 등)는 확인되었으나, Tom22 및 Tom37은 식물 미토콘드리아에서 확인되지 않았습니다.
