Target Information
The MT-ATP6 gene encodes a protein essential for normal mitochondrial function. Mitochondria convert energy from food into ATP through oxidative phosphorylation. MT-ATP6 forms part of ATP synthase (complex V), responsible for the final step of oxidative phosphorylation. One segment of ATP synthase enables proton flow across the mitochondrial membrane, while another segment uses that energy to convert ADP to ATP.
