Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is one polypeptide of a small nuclear ribonucleoprotein complex and belongs to the snRNP SMB/SMN family. It plays a role in pre-mRNA processing and may be involved in tissue-specific alternative splicing events. The gene produces a bicistronic transcript also encoding the SNRPN upstream reading frame (SNURF). Multiple transcription initiation sites and alternative splicing occur in the 5′ untranslated region. The 5′ UTR functions as an imprinting center, and alterations in this region are associated with Angelman and Prader-Willi syndromes due to imprinting defects.
