Target Information
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme that facilitates the rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, protons, and bicarbonate ions, and is abundant in mammalian tissues.
CA IX is a hypoxia-inducible gene regulated by HIF-1α and is stable within the membrane. Carbonic anhydrases play a key role in pH regulation by controlling hydrogen ion (H⁺) flux.
Under hypoxic conditions, inhibition of CA IX leads to increased cell death, making CA IX a reliable histochemical marker of hypoxia.
