BCL-XL은 BCL-2 단백질 패밀리에 속하며, 이들 구성원은 이합체(hetero/homodimer)를 형성하여 세포의 항/친-아포토시스 조절에 관여합니다.
BCL-XL은 외부 미토콘드리아 막에 위치하며, 막 채널(VDAC)의 개폐를 조절하여 미토콘드리아 막 전위, 활성산소종 생성, 그리고 cytochrome C 방출에 영향을 줍니다.
두 가지 스플라이싱 변이가 보고되었으며, 긴 형태는 아포토시스 억제제로, 짧은 형태는 아포토시스 활성화 인자로 작용합니다.
