Target Information
Acetylcholinesterase hydrolyzes the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions and brain cholinergic synapses, thereby terminating signal transmission. It is also present on red blood cell membranes, forming the Yt blood group antigen. Multiple molecular forms exist with similar catalytic properties but differing in oligomeric assembly and cell surface attachment. The major form found in brain, muscle, and other tissues is hydrophilic, forming disulfide-linked oligomers with collagenous or lipid-containing structural subunits.
