Target Information
Spectrin (Sp), the most abundant erythrocyte membrane skeleton protein, helps maintain the biconcave shape and elasticity of red blood cells. It consists of a 280 kDa alpha subunit and a 246 kDa beta subunit forming a rod-like structure. In other tissues, distinct but homologous alpha and beta subunits (fodrin) exist. The erythrocyte subunits are designated as alpha-1 and beta-1; fodrin subunits as alpha-2 and beta-2. Alternatively spliced forms are denoted epsilon-1, epsilon-2, etc. (e.g., beta-1 epsilon-1).
