Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA and show significant sequence diversity across species, complicating sequence homology recognition. The MRPS27 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that may interact functionally with death-associated protein 3 (DAP3).
