Target Information
Opsins are members of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. In addition to visual opsins, mammals possess several non-visual photoreceptive opsins expressed in extraocular tissues.
Opsin 3 is strongly expressed in brain and testis, weakly in liver, placenta, heart, lung, skeletal muscle, kidney, and pancreas, and may also be expressed in the retina.
It has canonical features of a photoreceptive opsin and may play a role in encephalic photoreception. Strong expression in brain regions such as the preoptic area and paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, with patterned expression in cerebral cortex, cerebellar Purkinje cells, striatal neurons, thalamic nuclei, and spinal interneurons.
