Target Information
Opsins belong to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. In mammals, non-visual opsins are expressed in extraocular tissues. Opsin 3 is strongly expressed in brain and testis, weakly in liver, placenta, heart, lung, skeletal muscle, kidney, and pancreas, and may also be expressed in the retina.
The protein has canonical photoreceptive opsin features and may play a role in encephalic photoreception. It is highly expressed in the preoptic area and paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, and shows patterned expression in cerebral cortex regions, cerebellar Purkinje cells, striatal neurons, thalamic nuclei, and spinal cord interneurons.
