Target Information
The Myogenic determination gene (MyoD) was first identified by its ability to convert embryonic mouse fibroblast cells to muscle cells. Forced expression of MyoD (human homolog is myf3) in various cells can induce muscle differentiation or activate muscle-specific genes.
The regulatory domain of MyoD contains a basic DNA-binding motif and a helix-loop-helix (HLH) dimerization motif. Related genes with similar HLH domains include myf5, myogenin (myf4), and myf6 (MRF4, herculin).
