Target Information
Kallikreins are a subgroup of serine proteases with diverse physiological functions. Many kallikreins are implicated in carcinogenesis and have potential as novel biomarkers for cancer and other diseases.
The KLK7 gene is one of fifteen kallikrein subfamily members located on chromosome 19. Its encoded enzyme participates in proteolysis of intercellular cohesive structures preceding desquamation, which is the shedding of the outermost layer of the epidermis.
Alternative splicing of this gene results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
