Target Information

Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) are a family of closely related growth factors characterized by a conserved pattern of eight cysteine residues and common VEGF receptors. VEGFs stimulate endothelial cells, induce angiogenesis, promote cell migration, increase vascular permeability, and inhibit apoptosis.
VEGFB shares structural similarities with VEGF and PIGF and is often co-expressed with VEGF. Two alternatively spliced isoforms exist: VEGFB167 and VEGFB186. VEGFB167 is a heparin-binding protein associated with cells or extracellular matrix, while VEGFB186 is secreted.
VEGFB binds to VEGFR1 (flt1) but not VEGFR2, and is highly expressed in heart, skeletal muscle, and pancreas. Expression of VEGFB in human breast cancers has been linked to lymph node metastasis. The VEGFB gene is mapped to chromosome 11q13.
