Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Vimentin, along with desmin, is expressed during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. It also plays a role in steroid synthesis by regulating cholesterol transport within cells. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to cytoskeletal reorganization, facilitating lipid droplet interactions with mitochondria and promoting steroidogenesis.
