Target Information

The flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs) are NADPH-dependent enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of many drugs and xenobiotics. In most mammals, FMO2 catalyzes the N-oxidation of primary alkylamines through an N-hydroxylamine intermediate. In humans, this enzyme is truncated and likely rapidly degraded, resulting in no catalytic activity. A functional allele has been reported in African Americans, though no sequence evidence is available. The FMO2 gene is clustered with FMO1, FMO3, and FMO4 on chromosome 1.
