Target Information
CD18 integrin beta 2 subunit is a 90 kDa type I transmembrane protein expressed on all leukocytes.
It can combine with integrin molecules CD11a–c to form heterodimers at the cell surface, which are involved in cell adhesion and signaling.
CD18 forms heterodimers with four CD11 molecules to constitute leukocyte (beta2) integrins:
- αLβ2 (CD11a/CD18, LFA-1)
- αMβ2 (CD11b/CD18, Mac-1, CR3)
- αXβ2 (CD11c/CD18)
- αDβ2 (CD11d/CD18)
These integrins are essential for proper leukocyte migration and intercellular contact.
Deficiency or reduced expression of CD18 leads to leukocyte adhesion deficiency type I (LAD1) or psoriasiform skin disease.
CD18 also serves as a target for Mannheimia haemolytica leukotoxin, mediating cytolysis.
