Target Information
Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) function to conjugate reduced glutathione to various hydrophobic electrophiles. GDAP1 (ganglioside-induced differentiation-associated protein 1) is a GST-like protein characterized by an extended GST domain II and a predicted transmembrane domain, features uncommon among GST family members. GDAP1 may play a role in ganglioside-induced neurite differentiation signaling and in protecting myelin membranes from free-radical damage. Mutations in GDAP1 are associated with several forms of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, an inherited peripheral nervous system disorder characterized by reduced nerve conduction, progressive distal muscle atrophy, and absent deep tendon reflexes.
