Target Information
Sodium/calcium exchanger proteins are integral membrane proteins primarily found in cardiac cells. In cardiac myocytes, Ca²⁺ concentration fluctuates between low levels during relaxation and high levels during contraction. The Na⁺/Ca²⁺ exchanger 1 (NCX1) mediates Ca²⁺ extrusion from cardiac cells during relaxation.
Four NCX1 isoforms (NCX1.1, NCX1.3, NCX1.7, NCX1.10) arise from alternative splicing. NCX1 mRNA is highly expressed in the heart and at lower levels in the brain. NCX2 is predominantly expressed in the brain, whereas NCX1 shows broader distribution in heart, kidney, lung, and muscle tissues. Differences in expression patterns suggest distinct functional roles. Regulation mechanisms for these exchangers remain incompletely understood.
