Target Information
This gene encodes a homolog to the E. coli alkB gene product. The E. coli alkB protein is part of the adaptive response mechanism for DNA alkylation damage repair. It reverses damage through oxidative demethylation of 1-methyladenine and 3-methylcytosine.
ABH1 acts as a dioxygenase that repairs alkylated single-stranded DNA and RNA containing 3-methylcytosine by oxidative demethylation. It requires molecular oxygen, alpha-ketoglutarate, and iron.
The protein may play a role in placental trophoblast lineage differentiation and possesses DNA lyase activity, introducing double-stranded breaks at abasic sites. It cleaves both single-stranded and double-stranded DNA at abasic sites, showing the highest activity toward double-stranded DNA with two abasic sites.
