Target Information
Potassium channels are present in most mammalian cells, where they participate in a wide range of physiological responses. The KCNJ1 gene encodes an inward-rectifier type potassium channel that is activated by internal ATP and plays a role in potassium homeostasis. It allows potassium to flow preferentially into the cell. Mutations in this gene are associated with antenatal Bartter syndrome, characterized by salt wasting, hypokalemic alkalosis, hypercalciuria, and low blood pressure. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
