Phosphodiesterases (PDEs) regulate the intracellular levels of cAMP and cGMP. These cyclic nucleotides act as second messengers in various physiological processes such as vascular resistance, cardiac output, visceral motility, immune response, inflammation, neuroplasticity, vision, and reproduction.
PDEs are divided into 10 families and differ in structure, tissue expression, localization, substrate specificity, regulation, and sensitivity to inhibitors. Their diversity makes PDEs promising pharmacological targets for diseases influenced by cyclic nucleotide signaling (Hetman et al., 2000).
