Target Information

Zic1 encodes a zinc finger protein expressed in the developing or matured central nervous system in a highly restricted manner. Zic is expressed in granule cells that make synaptic contact with Purkinje cells. Zic1 is critical to cerebellar pattern formation. Expression of Zic genes begins at gastrulation and neurulation, becoming restricted to dorsal neural ectoderm and paraxial mesoderm. The Zic1 gene maps to chromosome 9 in mouse. Its 5′ flanking region contains a region-specific enhancer essential for in-vivo and in-vitro function. Zic gene products show distinct temporal mRNA expression profiles. The Drosophila odd-paired gene is highly homologous to the Zic family. Zic2 and Zic3 are similar genes; Zic2 is essential for brain formation, and Zic3 is important for right-left axis formation.
