Target Information

The PCBP2 protein is multifunctional and, along with PCBP-1 and hnRNPK, is one of the major cellular poly(rC)-binding proteins. It contains three K-homologous (KH) domains involved in RNA binding. Together with PCBP-1, it acts as a translational coactivator of poliovirus RNA by interacting with stem-loop IV of the IRES, promoting RNA replication via binding to the 5′-terminal cloverleaf structure.
Additionally, PCBP2 participates in translational control of 15-lipoxygenase mRNA, HPV16 L2 mRNA, and hepatitis A virus RNA. It is also implicated in the formation of an alpha-globin mRNP complex associated with mRNA stability. PCBP2 and PCBP1 share paralogous genes (PCBP3, PCBP4), likely resulting from gene duplication events, and have two processed pseudogenes (PCBP2P1, PCBP2P2). Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
