Target Information
BCL-XL is a member of the BCL-2 protein family, which forms hetero- or homodimers acting as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in various cellular activities.
BCL-XL is located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulates the VDAC channel, influencing mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release — key factors in apoptosis.
Two alternatively spliced transcript variants produce distinct isoforms:
- Longer isoform: acts as an apoptotic inhibitor
- Shorter isoform: acts as an apoptotic activator
