Target Information

Occludin is a 65 kDa protein that can exist in various phosphorylated forms (up to ~82 kDa). It plays a key role in regulating tight junction localization and function. Polyunsaturated fatty acids up-regulate occludin expression, enhancing transendothelial resistance and reducing permeability. Expression levels vary by tissue—high in brain tissue and lower in non-neural tissues. Structural features are highly conserved across species. Under-expression of occludin contributes to tumor endothelial junction permeability and brain tumor edema formation.
