Target Information
Glucagon is a 29-residue polypeptide hormone (MW 3482) produced in the pancreas. A related hormone, enteroglucagon (or oxyntomodulin), produced in the intestinal mucosa, extends the glucagon sequence by 8 additional residues at the C-terminus. Glucagon promotes glycogenolysis, lipolysis, gluconeogenesis, and ketogenesis—actions opposing insulin, thus increasing blood glucose levels. Immunocytochemical studies show glucagon localized in pancreatic alpha cells, comprising 15–20% of islet cells, mainly at the periphery. Glucagon-type peptides are associated with tumors or glucagonomas, with no known deficiency or hyperplasia states. Glucagon-specific antibodies are valuable as cell and tumor markers and for hormone quantification in research.
