Target Information
Estrogen Receptor beta (ER beta, NR3A2) protein is approximately 55 kD, with multiple isoforms ranging from 36–59 kD. Human ER beta was initially cloned and characterized from testis.
Estrogen Receptors (ER) are members of the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. The estrogen receptor is a ligand-activated transcription factor that, upon binding estrogen, undergoes conformational change enabling dimerization and DNA binding to estrogen response elements (ERE).
ER beta binds estrogens with similar affinity to ER alpha and can inhibit ER alpha activity in reproductive tissues. It is expressed widely in many tissues and acts as a tumor suppressor, relevant to diseases such as prostate cancer, autism spectrum disorder, medullary thyroid carcinoma, De Quervain disease, and cardiovascular disorders.
