Target Information
CYP27B1 is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These monooxygenases catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. The protein localizes to the inner mitochondrial membrane and hydroxylates 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 at the 1α position, producing 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3—the active form of vitamin D3. This active form binds to the vitamin D receptor to regulate calcium metabolism. Mutations in CYP27B1 can lead to vitamin D-dependent rickets type I.
