Target Information
B4GALT1 is one of seven beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase (beta4GalT) genes encoding type II membrane-bound glycoproteins with specificity for UDP-galactose. These enzymes transfer galactose in a beta1,4 linkage to acceptor sugars such as GlcNAc, Glc, and Xyl.
Each beta4GalT has distinct functions in glycoconjugate biosynthesis. As type II membrane proteins, they possess an N-terminal hydrophobic sequence directing them to the Golgi apparatus, serving as a transmembrane anchor.
B4GALT1 uniquely participates in both glycoconjugate and lactose biosynthesis. In lactating mammary tissues, it forms a heterodimer with alpha-lactalbumin to catalyze UDP-galactose + D-glucose ⇔ UDP + lactose.
The enzyme’s dual activities result from alternate transcription initiation and post-translational processing.
