Product Specific Information

Antibody detects endogenous levels of total GABRR1.

Target Information

GAD-65 and GAD-67 are glutamate decarboxylases that catalyze the production of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). In the central nervous system, GABA functions as the main inhibitory neurotransmitter by increasing Cl⁻ conductance, which inhibits neuronal firing. GABA activates ionotropic (GABAA) and metabotropic (GABAB) receptors, as well as a third class, GABAC receptors.

GABAC receptors mediate rapid inhibitory neurotransmission in the retina. Three human genes—GABRR1, GABRR2, and GABRR3—encode the receptor subunits. GABRR1 and GABRR2 are located on chromosome 6q, while GABRR3 is found on chromosome 3q11–q13.3. These genes share a common ancestor with GABAA receptor subunit genes and diverged early in evolution. Although highly expressed in the retina, GABAC receptor subunits are also found in other brain regions, particularly within the visual pathways.
