Target Information
The cytochrome c oxidase (COX) family functions as the final electron donor in the respiratory chain, driving a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane and resulting in water production.
The mammalian COX apoenzyme is a dimer composed of 13 subunits, both mitochondrial and nuclear.
COX5 is a heme A-containing chain that converts oxygen and hydrogen into water.
Two isoforms exist: COX5a (aerobic) and COX5b (hypoxic). COX5a is upregulated under high oxygen conditions, while COX5b expression increases under low oxygen to optimize COX enzyme turnover.
