West Nile Virus (WNV)는 Flaviviridae 계통의 양가닥 RNA 바이러스로, St. Louis encephalitis virus, yellow fever virus, Dengue virus 등을 포함합니다.
1937년 우간다 West Nile 지역에서 처음 분리되었으며, 이후 아프리카, 아시아, 유럽 및 미국 전역으로 확산되었습니다.
바이러스 입자는 RNA 유전체를 둘러싼 core/capsid 단백질과 이를 감싸는 막성 envelope 및 matrix 단백질로 구성되어 있으며, 이들은 세포 침투에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
또한 core 단백질은 caspase-9 경로를 통한 세포사멸 유도 및 염증 유발에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
