Target Information

Ankyrins are a family of proteins that link integral membrane proteins to the spectrin-actin cytoskeleton, playing key roles in cell motility, activation, proliferation, contact, and maintenance of specialized membrane domains. Multiple isoforms of ankyrin are expressed in a tissue-specific and developmentally regulated manner. Most ankyrins consist of three domains: an amino-terminal domain with ankyrin repeats, a central spectrin-binding domain, and a carboxy-terminal regulatory domain. Ankyrin 1, the prototype, was first discovered in erythrocytes and later found in brain and muscle. Mutations in erythrocytic ankyrin 1 are associated with hereditary spherocytosis. Alternative splicing generates various isoforms, including muscle-specific truncated forms from alternate promoters.
