Target Information
Galactose-1-phosphate uridyl transferase (GALT) catalyzes the second step of the Leloir pathway of galactose metabolism, converting UDP-glucose and galactose-1-phosphate to glucose-1-phosphate and UDP-galactose.
Deficiency of this enzyme causes classic galactosemia in humans, which can be fatal in newborns if lactose is not removed from the diet.
The pathophysiology of galactosemia remains incompletely understood.
