Target Information
Trace amines are biogenic amines present in very low levels in mammalian tissues. Although some trace amines have clearly defined roles as neurotransmitters in invertebrates, their role in vertebrates remains speculative. They are likely involved in various physiological functions not yet fully understood. Expression is found at low abundance in various brain tissues and fetal liver, but not in cerebellum or placenta. In the brain, expression levels are comparable across basal ganglia, frontal cortex, substantia nigra, amygdala, and hippocampus, with the highest in hippocampus and lowest in basal ganglia.
