Target Information
The PADI2 gene encodes a member of the peptidyl arginine deiminase (PAD) enzyme family, which catalyzes the post-translational deimination of proteins, converting arginine residues into citrullines in the presence of calcium ions. PAD family members display distinct substrate specificities and tissue-specific expression patterns. The type II enzyme (PADI2) is the most widely expressed, with known substrates including myelin basic protein (CNS) and vimentin (skeletal muscle, macrophages). PADI2 is implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis, and also in glaucoma pathogenesis. This gene is part of a cluster with four other paralogous PAD genes.
