Target Information
Bone Morphogenic Proteins (BMPs) are members of the TGF-beta superfamily that regulate bone and cartilage formation. Mature BMPs (30–38 kDa) form a cysteine knot structure similar to TGF-beta. Lovostatin enhances bone formation by activating the bmp-2 gene. BMPs induce bone matrix protein production and modulate stromal cell and osteoclast proliferation. They also play roles in visceral development, cell differentiation, apoptosis, and morphogenesis. BMPs contribute to dorsal/ventral patterning and signal via Smad proteins through type I and II receptor interactions.
