Target Information
CYP11A1 (cytochrome P450C11A1, cytochrome P450scc, subfamily XIA) is an enzyme that catalyzes the first step of steroid biosynthesis under cAMP signal modulation. It converts cholesterol to pregnenolone in steroidogenic cells, regulated by hormonal control of cholesterol availability. Expression of CYP11A1 is controlled by transcription factor SF-1, and the SF-1 binding site is essential for hormonal stimulation. c-Jun and SF-1 act synergistically to activate gene expression. Forskolin and 8-Br-cAMPS elevate CYP11A1 mRNA levels in interstitial cell monolayers with functional adenylate cyclase.
