Target Information
Atp1a2 encodes an Na⁺/K⁺ ATPase, a membrane protein composed of alpha and beta subunits. This enzyme maintains essential electrochemical gradients within cells by actively transporting sodium (Na⁺) and potassium (K⁺) ions.
The Atp1a2 gene product belongs to the P-type cation transport ATPase family, specifically the Na⁺/K⁺-ATPases subfamily. These ion pumps are critical for osmoregulation, sodium-coupled transport of various molecules, and electrical excitability in nerve and muscle cells.
The catalytic alpha subunit is encoded by multiple genes, and Atp1a2 encodes the alpha 2 subunit. Mutations in Atp1a2 are associated with familial hemiplegic migraine type 2 and alternating hemiplegia of childhood.
