Target Information
This intronless gene is thought to have been generated by retrotransposition of a fully processed PCBP-2 mRNA. PCBP1 and PCBP2 have paralogues that likely arose from duplication events of entire genes. The encoded protein is multifunctional and, along with PCBP2 and hnRNPK, corresponds to major cellular polydomains involved in RNA binding. Together with PCBP2, it functions as a translational coactivator of poliovirus RNA via sequence-specific interaction with stem-loop IV of the IRES and promotes poliovirus RNA replication by binding to its 5′-terminal cloverleaf structure. It is also implicated in translational control of 15-lipoxygenase mRNA, HPV type 16 L2 mRNA, and hepatitis A virus RNA. Additionally, it may contribute to formation of a sequence-specific alpha-globin mRNP complex associated with alpha-globin mRNA stability.
