The ubiquitin pathway regulates cellular growth and proliferation through ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis, which occurs after covalent attachment of ubiquitin to a lysine residue of a target protein.
This process involves three enzymatic reactions:
- Ubiquitin-activating enzyme (E1)
- Ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (E2)
- Ubiquitin ligase (E3), which transfers activated ubiquitin to the substrate protein.
