Target Information
The IL-16 protein is a pleiotropic cytokine functioning as a chemoattractant, a modulator of T cell activation, and an inhibitor of HIV replication. Its signaling is mediated by CD4. Proteolytic processing of IL-16 produces two functional proteins: the secreted C-terminal peptide (cytokine activity) and the N-terminal product (potential role in cell cycle control). Caspase 3 is involved in this processing. Multiple transcript variants exist due to alternative splicing.
