Target Information
The Drosophila atonal gene produces a protein with basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domains essential for nervous system development. Mammalian atonal homolog 1 (MATH-1, also known as Atoh1, Ath1, or HATH-1) is a 351 amino acid HLH transcription factor structurally homologous to the Drosophila atonal gene product. In mice, MATH-1 expression begins around embryonic day 9.5 in cranial ganglions and the dorsal CNS, later restricted to the external granular layer of the cerebellum by day 18, and becomes undetectable in adults. MATH-1 is suggested to play a role in differentiation of neural cell subsets through activation of E-box–dependent transcription.
