Target Information
The FGF9 gene encodes a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family, which has broad mitogenic and cell survival activities. FGF family proteins are involved in embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth, and invasion.
FGF9 acts as a secreted factor stimulating growth in cultured glial cells and is mainly produced by neurons, playing a role in glial cell development.
Expression of the mouse homolog depends on Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling. Mice lacking this gene show male-to-female sex reversal, suggesting involvement in testicular embryogenesis.
