This gene encodes an activating transcription factor belonging to the ATF subfamily and bZIP (basic-region leucine zipper) family. It regulates the expression of downstream target genes related to growth, survival, and other cellular activities.
Phosphorylation at serine 63 by kinases such as PKA, CaMK I/II, MSK, and CDK3 enhances its transactivation and transcriptional activities, contributing to cell transformation.
Chromosomal translocation involving this gene and FUS (chromosome 16) or EWSR1 (chromosome 22) can result in chimeric proteins associated with angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma and clear cell sarcoma.
A pseudogene exists on chromosome 6.
