Target Information

Eukaryotic cells rely on actin and microtubule-based protein motors to generate intracellular movements. These protein motors contain specialized domains that hydrolyze ATP to produce force and movement along a cytoskeletal polymer (actin for myosin family and microtubules for kinesin and dynein families).

Dynein is involved in cytoplasmic motile functions such as chromosomal movement, retrograde organelle and axonal transport, endocytic pathway regulation, and Golgi apparatus organization. In all cell types, dynein has the same basic structure and is composed of two or three heavy chains (~450 kDa), three intermediate chains (70–125 kDa), and at least four light chains (15–25 kDa).
