FOXP1 유전자는 forkhead box (FOX) 전사 인자 계열의 P 아형에 속합니다. FOX 전사 인자는 발달 및 성체 단계에서 조직 및 세포 유형 특이적 유전자 발현 조절에 중요한 역할을 합니다. FOXP1 단백질은 DNA 결합 및 단백질-단백질 결합 도메인을 모두 포함하며, 여러 종양 유형에서 소실되어 종양 억제 유전자로 작용할 수 있습니다. 이 유전자는 염색체 3p14.1 영역에 위치하며, 이 영역은 종양 억제 유전자가 존재하는 것으로 보고되었습니다. 대체 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사 변이체가 생성되어 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화합니다.
